Seventh Grade

As students move towards 7th grade and then high school, they are constantly being challenged to find their place in the world, both academically and socially, so that they can find where they fit. To help them find their place in the world, students will study the history of our great nation. They will read first person writings of John Winthrop, John Locke, Patrick Henry, Thomas Paine, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, James Monroe, Abraham Lincoln and Woodrow Wilson, as they struggled and succeeded in defining who they were in the world. In Literature, they will read study American stories that recount the struggles of everyday Americans, such as Red Badge of Courage, Little Women, and To Kill a Mockingbird.

In Saxon Math, students will dive into pre-Algebra. They will covers topics including signed numbers, exponents, and roots, absolute value, equations and inequalities, scientific notation, unit conversions, polynomials, graphs, factoring, quadratic equations, direct and inverse variations, exponential growth, statistics, and probability.

Building on their studies in Earth Science and Human Anatomy, students will study General Science this year, including astronomy, meteorology, oceanography, earth study, geology, paleontology, and environmental science modules which will give students a solid foundation of scientific study.

Students will continue their study of Latin, moving into Second Form Latin, where they will complete verb paradigms for all four conjunctions in the indicative and passive. This systematic approach will build on First Form Latin, and lay the foundation for translation and rapid recognition of inflected forms.

In Music and Art, students will continue to study the History of Art, moving from Impressionism to Cubism in addition to studying the Romantic composers to blues & jazz.

As one of the oldest grades at the school, students will get to enjoy special social events, service projects, and a class trip. They will be given privileges in leadership roles in many areas of school life including during weekly Assembly.
