Kindergarten

The Kindergarten school day begins at 8:30 A.M. and ends at 3:00 P.M. for full-day students and 11:55 A.M. for half-day + enrichment students. These half-day students will stay until 3:00 P.M. on Mondays and Thursdays for enrichment activities.

Kindergarten is a special and crucial time in our students' academic careers. While completing their daily “jobs” in a structured classroom setting, students begin to understand how magical learning can be. This gives them a sense of pride and ownership, and they flourish in mastering their tasks.

Rather than memorize sight words, students learn how to read through a phonetic approach that emphasizes an understanding of letter sounds and the skills needed to decode words. This allows our students to “sound out” words they have not seen before, making them excellent independent readers.

A Kindergarten day can be spent in language literacy through reading, writing, conversing, and listening. It can also encompass science, math, tuning of their fine-motor skills, music, art, and poetry. Kindergarten units are especially fun, creative, resourceful, and memory-making for our students. Kindergarten is a happy place, shaping confident, prepared, and eager students for first grade.

Children must be 5 years old by September 1.

Landry Snelling

Mrs. Snelling understands that each child is unique and possesses his or her own set of talents, learning styles and interests. As an educator, she strives to create a structured, nurturing and joyful classroom where everyone feels valued, supported and empowered to reach their full potential.

Before HCS, Mrs. Snelling taught Pre-K at Little Rock Christian Academy. She is a graduate of Texas A&M University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in Child Professional Services. When away from the classroom, Mrs. Snelling spends her time enjoying God's creation with her husband, Carter, and their golden retriever.

"It was amazing to see my son not only learn to read, but learn to read out loud with confidence over his Kindergarten year with Mrs. Patterson. A year later, he's still reading avidly thanks to her teaching."

“The teachers in Early Childhood make learning fun! In Pre-K, my son was memorizing and reciting nursery rhymes to his class. In Kindergarten, he is learning to not only read, but also spell out words due to the Carden curriculum. The growth in his confidence and self-discipline has been amazing to witness. This isn’t a school; it’s a second home for my children.”
