First Grade

“The Carden Method strives for success for each and every child;
approval for each and every child.” - Mae Carden

As students embark on their education journey, First Grade marks many “firsts” in the Carden Curriculum: conjugations, sentence analysis, dictation, poetry memorization and recitation, and parts of speech. From the foundation stones laid in previous years, students will continue to learn in an ordered, sequenced way. Saxon Math 1 and 2 aids in the repetitive foundation of numbers and how they relate to each other, as students learn to skip count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, identify ordinal positions of numbers, continue their mastery of basic addition & subtraction, geometric shapes and basic graphs.

In Literature, students are introduced to the beautiful illustrations of Beatrix Potter through the first four books of the Peter Rabbit series. This not only exposes the children to great stories but also to a new world of vocabulary, writing style and illustrations. Reading these enchanting and challenging books encourages the students to work hard and enjoy the success of their hard work. This allows them to grow in confidence towards their next educational adventure.

Students are introduced to daily journaling, where they will be encouraged to record observations of the world around them, the happenings of their day and what they sense, perceive, and feel.

They will learn to research, write and present their first report as well as complete a State Fair project that they will present to their peers.
